BPJS Kesehatan and MUI Partner to Boost JKN Participation in East Java

BPJS Kesehatan and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) held a joint event, TASBIH JKN, at the MUI office in Surabaya on 29 June 2026 to strengthen cooperation aimed at increasing participants’ compliance with the national health insurance program (JKN). BPJS director Akmal Budi Yulianto said the initiative will mobilise da’i and da’iyah to educate the public, improve awareness of rights and duties, and address gaps in understanding, information access and digital service use. He noted that, as of 31 May 2026, JKN covered 285.25 million people (about 98.9 % of the population) with an active participation rate of 82.8 %. MUI’s deputy chair M. Cholil Nafis highlighted the programme’s alignment with Islamic principles, describing health preservation as a maqashid‑syariah goal and premium payments as a form of charitable assistance. The council is preparing a fatwa to encourage zakat institutions to help vulnerable groups pay their JKN contributions. The East Java provincial government, represented by Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa’s office, voiced full support, emphasizing that the program reinforces community solidarity and social‑welfare values.
