BR-135 bridge demolition to cause traffic closures in Maranhão
The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) has scheduled the demolition of a section of the Estreito dos Mosquitos bridge on the BR-135 highway in Maranhão. The operation is set to take place on Sunday, November 1, 2026, between 10:00 and 16:00.
To ensure safety during the demolition, traffic will be completely halted at two strategic points. For those traveling toward São Luís, the closure will occur at km 40 in Bacabeira. For those leaving the capital, the blockage will be at km 22. As the BR-135 is the primary road link between the island of São Luís and the mainland, the six-hour interruption is expected to significantly impact regional transit.
The structure being demolished is located on the left side of the highway at km 24. This specific section has been restricted since April 2026 following technical assessments. The bridge, originally built in the 1960s, has been under monitoring by DNIT as part of the planning process for a new bridge construction.
