BR-163 highway safety initiative targets illegal overtaking in Mato Grosso

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) and the concessionaire Nova Rota do Oeste have launched the ‘Projeto Proteger’ educational initiative on the BR-163 highway in Mato Grosso, specifically between Sorriso and Lucas do Rio Verde. The project aims to reduce head-on collisions caused by illegal overtaking in continuous lane markings.

During the operation, monitoring cameras identified 35 drivers performing risky maneuvers. The PRF subsequently intercepted these drivers, allowing them to watch footage of their own infractions and receive guidance on the dangers of forced passing and improper overtaking.

Wilson Ferreira, Director of Operations and Technology at Nova Rota, emphasized that illegal maneuvers endanger both the offending driver and others on the road by creating unpredictable situations that can lead to fatal accidents.
