Brač island: Police recover WWII explosives from 200m deep cave

Croatian police and the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) completed a three-day operation to remove unexploded ordnance from the Gustrišica cave on Brač island. The cave, which reaches a depth of approximately 200 meters, is located near Gornji Humac.

During the operation, which took place from September 21 to 23, specialists from the Ministry of the Interior's explosive protection services recovered about 15 different explosive devices. These items, mostly dating from World War II, were deemed stable enough for transport to the surface.

Other munitions, primarily Italian-made Breda hand grenades, were in such poor condition that they could not be safely moved and were destroyed via controlled explosion at the bottom of the cave. Among the recovered items was a 50-kilogram German aerial bomb. Because of the risk of rock collapses, the bomb was extracted from the cave to be destroyed later at a suitable location under safe weather conditions.
