Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn trailer reveals December 2026 release

Netflix has released the first trailer for Ray Gunn, a new animated feature directed by Brad Bird and produced by Skydance Animation. The film is scheduled for a dual release: debuting in select theaters on December 3, 2026, followed by its streaming debut on Netflix on December 18, 2026.

Set in the retrofuturistic Art Deco city of Metropia—an alternate version of the future as imagined in 1939—the story follows private investigator Raymond Gunn, voiced by Sam Rockwell. Gunn becomes embroiled in a case involving murder, extraterrestrials, and a multimedia celebrity named Venus Nova, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. The film also features Tom Waits as Gunn’s alien partner, Eye-Ra, and includes a musical score by Michael Giacchino.

Bird, known for directing The Incredibles and Ratatouille, described the project as a blend of film noir and science fiction, comparing the concept to a mix of ‘The Maltese Falcon’ and ‘Buck Rogers’.
