NASCAR star Kyle Busch dies at 41; pneumonia turned sepsis, points removed

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch was found unresponsive while using a racing simulator in Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 20 and died the following day at age 41. A death certificate obtained by media outlets shows he had been battling bacterial pneumonia for "days to weeks" before it progressed to severe sepsis. The sepsis triggered disseminated intravascular coagulation, leading to organ failure and ultimately hemorrhagic shock.

Following the family’s statement, NASCAR removed Busch’s name from the Cup Series points standings, citing empathy for his family and the impact of seeing his name remain in the rankings. At the time of removal, Busch was 23rd with 217 points after 12 races.

The racing community responded with extensive tributes. Drivers such as Daniel Suárez, Brad Keselowski, Kenny Wallace, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared memories, highlighted his mentorship, and noted the shock of losing a competitor to a common illness. The incident has also prompted health experts to warn about the rapid progression of pneumonia to sepsis.
