Braga begins 18 million euro cultural hub project
The Municipality of Braga has launched a comprehensive rehabilitation project for the former Cinema São Geraldo and the adjacent Pé Alado building. The initiative aims to transform these long-abandoned sites into a multidisciplinary cultural hub in the city's historic center.
The total investment is expected to exceed 18 million euros, covering property acquisition, technical studies in acoustics and geotechnics, construction, and future equipment. While the construction contract was awarded for approximately 13 million euros, the broader budget includes all preparatory and finishing costs.
The new facility will feature a versatile auditorium capable of hosting up to 800 people (700 standing or 100 seated, with an alternative capacity of 340 seated). It will also house what is described as the largest ‘blackbox’ performance space in the country, with a capacity for 500 people, alongside a restaurant/cafeteria for 80 guests. Additionally, the project will provide new premises for the São Lázaro and São João do Souto Parish Council.
