Braga hosts Paraíso festival celebrating African culture
The city of Braga is hosting the Paraíso festival, a two-day event dedicated to celebrating African culture through music, cinema, gastronomy, and debate. Under the theme “Past and future in the Afro-descendant experience,” the festival features a wide array of cultural activities across various venues.
A major highlight is a concert by the Cesária Évora Orchestra at Theatro Circo on Saturday, the 12th. The orchestra, which includes musicians who performed with the late Cape Verdean singer, will be accompanied by prominent Cape Verdean voices such as Elida Almeida, Lucibela, and Ceuzany. This performance serves as a tribute to the singer, who passed away in 2011.
Other scheduled events include a screening of the film “Si Destino” by Vanessa Fernandes, followed by a discussion. The festival also hosts a presentation of the “Anti-racist Manual for Arts and Education” project, which is being developed into a book. This presentation commemorates the centenary of the birth of Amílcar Cabral, a key figure in the independence movements of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. The festival is also part of the celebrations marking 30 years of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
