Bragança Moves Solar Eclipse Viewing to Aerodrome Over Fire Risk

The municipality of Bragança in Portugal cancelled the planned observation activities for the total solar eclipse on 12 August in the villages of Rio de Onor and Guadramil because of a heightened risk of forest fires. The event has been relocated to the municipal aerodrome, where the eclipse will still achieve about 99% sun obscuration. The programme – which includes scientific, educational and cultural activities, certified viewing glasses and the presence of professional and amateur astronomers – will remain unchanged despite the venue shift. Municipal officials said the decision aims to ensure public safety, avoid crowding in vulnerable forest areas and keep civil protection resources available. They will continue to monitor weather conditions and fire danger throughout the event. The eclipse, a rare phenomenon not seen in Portugal for over a century, has already filled hotels in Bragança and neighboring Vinhais.
