Brahim Hemdani faces scrutiny following first Algeria squad selection
Brahim Hemdani, the new head coach of the Algeria national football team, is facing early scrutiny following the release of his first squad list and his first press conference. Former international player Ali Bencheikh commented on the selection, noting that the list does not represent a major overhaul of the squad, as it includes many returning players. Bencheikh emphasized that players must prove their value on the pitch, particularly those playing for mid-tier European clubs, and stated that the ultimate test for Hemdani will be establishing a clear playing style and achieving results.
During his inaugural press conference, Hemdani was confronted by journalists regarding his own international career. Specifically, he was questioned about his decision to delay representing Algeria until 2008, after having played for major clubs like Olympique de Marseille and Glasgow Rangers. Hemdani addressed the criticism directly, stating, “I assume my choices,” and expressed a preference for direct questioning as he looks toward the future of the team.
