Brain aging research and rising dementia cases in Italy

Research into human brain aging has revealed that cognitive fragility often stems from internal reorganization rather than DNA mutations. A study analyzing hippocampal tissue from donors aged 20 to 100 shows that as people age, there is a decrease in astrocytes—cells that support neurons and maintain synaptic balance. Additionally, microglia, the brain's immune cells, show a shift toward a state more prone to inflammation, increasing sensitivity to inflammatory signals.

In the Piedmont region of Italy, dementia and Alzheimer's cases are rising, with approximately 92,000 cases reported. Medical specialists highlight key warning signs, including repetitive memory loss, difficulty with routine tasks, disorientation in familiar places, language struggles, and persistent changes in mood or personality. Experts emphasize that while some cognitive slowing is normal with age, medical attention is necessary when difficulties become progressive and interfere with daily autonomy.
