Brain aging research reveals stable language skills amid immune system changes

Recent scientific studies have revealed contrasting ways in which the human brain changes during the aging process. Research published in Nature Communications indicates that language abilities may remain stable or even improve during healthy aging. By comparing brain scans of adults aged 41 to 80 with younger adults, researchers found that the neural networks specialized for language processing maintain activity levels similar to those of younger individuals, even when tasks require significant effort.

In contrast, research published in Science highlights significant transformations in the brain's immune system starting around age 50. A study involving brain tissue from adults aged 20 to 95 found that microglia—cells responsible for cleaning and protecting the brain—decrease significantly between the ages of 50 and 75. These cells are often replaced by others with higher inflammatory activity.

Furthermore, researchers observed changes in the three-dimensional structure of DNA within cell nuclei, which affects gene activation and the function of immune cells. The studies also noted a potential weakening of the blood-brain barrier, which serves to filter harmful substances from the brain.
