Brain Aging Studies Link Financial Hardship to Shrinkage, Show Reversal
A 70‑year British cohort study of adults born in 1946 found that persistent financial hardship was associated with lower memory and processing‑speed scores by age 53 and, later in life, larger brain ventricles indicating tissue shrinkage. The analysis of nearly 3,000 participants tracked income and cognitive performance over decades and showed the effect persisted after adjusting for childhood intelligence, mental health and education.
Two large 2026 studies, including a University of Texas at Dallas Center for BrainHealth trial that followed 3,966 adults aged 19 to 94, demonstrated that brief daily mental exercises (five to 15 minutes) over three years can produce measurable cognitive gains even in participants in their 90s. The studies used a novel BrainHealth Index to capture improvements across multiple brain‑fitness dimensions, challenging the long‑standing view that age‑related brain decline is irreversible.
