Brain drain rates vary across Turkish provinces

Recent data reveals significant disparities in brain drain rates across various Turkish provinces. Tokat recorded the lowest total brain drain rate among six compared cities at 0.7 percent, with male rates at 1.1 percent and female rates at 0.3 percent. In contrast, neighboring provinces such as Amasya and Samsun reported higher rates of 1.0 percent.

On a national scale, İzmir holds the highest brain drain rate at 3.5 percent, followed by Ankara at 2.9 percent and Eskişehir at 2.3 percent. The loss of highly educated individuals, such as molecular biology and genetics graduates who show a 13.1 percent migration rate, highlights a critical challenge for the country's human capital.

Economic and social implications of this trend include the loss of investment in education, entrepreneurship, and tax revenue. Factors driving this migration include differences in wages, career opportunities, institutional quality, and quality of life, with many seeking greater personal freedoms and economic stability abroad.
