Brain dump technique helps reduce mental overload and anxiety
The “brain dump” technique, a foundational step in David Allen’s Getting Things Done (GTD) method, is used to alleviate mental overload by transferring tasks, ideas, and worries from the mind onto paper or digital applications.
According to Allen, the human brain is designed for processing information and generating ideas rather than acting as a storage device for reminders. Utilizing the mind as a repository for tasks can lead to inefficiency and increased stress. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that mental overload is linked to elevated cortisol levels, which can increase anxiety and diminish focus.
The technique works through three primary mechanisms: externalizing cognitive load to free up mental capacity, reducing the Zeigarnik effect, and providing a sense of control over responsibilities.
