Brain health and cognitive functions: strategies for mental maintenance

Cognitive functions serve as the brain's operating system, enabling the processing, storage, and retrieval of information. Key processes include attention, memory, language, and executive functions—the latter being critical for planning and impulse control.

To maintain brain health and neuroplasticity, experts recommend continuous learning, such as acquiring new languages or instruments. Physical aerobic exercise is also vital, as it increases cerebral blood flow and supports cell survival. Additionally, restorative sleep and an antioxidant-rich diet are essential for long-term cognitive protection.

Regarding age-related changes, neuroscientist Ana Ibáñez notes that difficulty concentrating in later years is often a result of cumulative factors rather than age alone. As the brain ages, it tends to automate tasks that previously required conscious effort, and increased life experience can lead to a more relaxed mental state, making sustained focus more challenging.
