Brain health: Scientist clarifies role of mental exercises in aging

Geneticist and medical doctor Vaidas Dirsė has addressed the effectiveness of mental exercises, such as crosswords and Sudoku, in preventing brain aging and dementia. While these activities are often marketed as simple ways to maintain mental sharpness, Dirsė notes a limitation known as the ability transfer problem. This means that while training improves performance in the specific task being practiced, those benefits do not necessarily translate to broader cognitive functions like general memory, attention, or complex problem-solving.

Data from the National Self-Awareness Index (NSI), initiated by Eurovaistinė, indicates that while 43 percent of the Lithuanian population attempts to improve their long-term health and longevity, only 9 percent consider it a top life priority. Furthermore, public concern often focuses on physical health, frequently leaving brain health as a secondary consideration.
