Brain implants restore movement and sensation in paralysis study
Researchers at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research in New York have achieved a breakthrough in treating paralysis using a hybrid brain-body interface (BBI). The technology utilizes a complex brain-computer interface (BCI) system to create a connection between the brain and the body.
In a pioneering study, patient Keith Thomas, who suffered a spinal cord injury in 2020 that left him paralyzed from the chest down, regained significant motor functions and sensation. By stimulating both the brain and the spinal cord, the system allowed him to perform delicate tasks such as eating, drinking, and grasping fragile objects like eggs. Notably, the sense of touch persisted even after the devices were turned off.
