Brain‑computer implant lets ALS patient speak independently at home
Scientists from the University of California, Davis, in collaboration with the University of Utrecht and Brown University, reported a brain‑computer interface (BCI) that restored autonomous speech and cursor control for a person with advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Implanted micro‑electrodes in the motor cortex translated neural activity into text, allowing the patient to type at an average speed of 56 words per minute without researcher assistance. Over nearly two years of home use, the system recorded more than 3,800 hours, producing over 183,000 sentences (almost two million words) with a 92 % sentence‑level accuracy and over 99 % precision in structured tests.
The device combined implanted electrodes with adaptive software, eye‑tracking integration and a simplified user interface, enabling family caregivers to operate it without technical support. The researchers note that the study involved a single participant and emphasize the need to test the technology with more people.
The findings were published in Nature Medicine, marking a significant step toward practical, at‑home assistive communication for individuals with severe motor impairments.
