Brain‑computer interface restores speech and full‑time work for ALS patient
Researchers at the University of California, Davis have demonstrated that an implanted intracortical brain‑computer interface (BCI) can translate a patient’s neural activity into text and cursor movements, enabling communication for a person with severe amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who had lost the ability to speak.
Over nearly two years of independent home use, the participant logged more than 3,800 hours, generated 183,060 sentences (about two million words) at an average rate of 56 words per minute. The system achieved over 99 % word‑level accuracy within a 125,000‑term vocabulary and 92 % phrase‑level accuracy in daily operation, allowing the user to send messages, write emails, browse the web and maintain a full‑time remote job.
The technology still relies on wired connections and daily preparation by trained caregivers, limiting immediate large‑scale adoption. The findings were published in Nature Medicine (2026) and represent a promising step toward restoring communication and employment for individuals with severe paralysis and speech loss.
