Brampton reports increased advance voter turnout for 2026 election

Brampton is seeing a rise in civic engagement for the 2026 municipal election, with nearly 25,000 residents participating in advance voting. This represents an estimated eight per cent increase compared to the previous municipal election.

As the final voting day approaches on October 26, officials noted that while advance voting numbers in Brampton, Toronto, and Mississauga are increasing, there are ongoing concerns regarding overall voter turnout. In Ontario's 2022 municipal elections, participation reached a historic low of 32.9 per cent.

Discussions surrounding the upcoming elections also highlight the gap between municipal council representation and the diversity of constituents in Canada's most diverse cities. Challenges identified include barriers for immigrant and visible minority candidates, the influence of campaign fundraising, and the impact of a shrinking local media environment on voter participation.
