Brancaccio‑Porta Sud interchange in Palermo completed after 40 years

The long‑planned Brancaccio‑Porta Sud interchange, also known as the Forum junction, has been fully completed in Palermo. The project, funded with €5 million from the national PNRR, links the urban road network to the A19 highway, improving access to the Brancaccio and Roccella districts, the Forum shopping centre and nearby industrial areas. Works included new lighting, green spaces, a railway‑adjacent parking area and upgrades to several local streets.

The first half of the ramp was opened in April 2023, and the final segment is expected to open to traffic by the end of August 2024 pending technical and administrative procedures. The mayor’s administration highlighted the work as a strategic node for city mobility, while Giuseppe Federico, president of the Second Circoscrizione, called it a “fundamental piece” of the area's transformation. Salvatore Orlando, the municipal assessor for public works, noted that the interchange had been awaited for decades, with the original tender dating back to 1986.
