Brandenburg industry warns of economic strain from rising water prices

Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in Brandenburg are warning of economic burdens following plans to increase water prices starting in 2027. The proposed changes include raising drinking water rates from 10 to 12 cents per cubic meter and increasing groundwater fees for industry and commerce from 11.5 to 13.8 cents per cubic meter.

André Fritsche, managing director for the three regional IHKs, noted that sectors such as energy, manufacturing, mining, tourism, logistics, and industrial parks will be affected. Specific examples include the cement manufacturer Cemex and the BASF-operated industrial park in Schwarzheide, which faces an additional 50,000 euro annual cost.

Environment Minister Hanka Mittelstädt defended the increase, stating that revenues will be used for necessary investments in water management. The decision follows increasing drought issues in the region.
