Brandenburg faces severe drought across 70 percent of its territory
Brandenburg is experiencing severe drought, with soil moisture deficits reaching depths of 1.8 meters. According to drought maps from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, approximately 70 percent of the state's area is classified as being under severe drought conditions.
The most critical areas are concentrated in the south and east, specifically around Berlin, Potsdam, and the Lusatia regions. While the north and northwest show moderate drought, the lack of significant precipitation—averaging only 5 millimeters over the past week—is failing to penetrate the surface effectively.
This ongoing water shortage poses significant risks to agriculture, as crops in late growth stages require consistent soil water. Additionally, the drought is impacting groundwater recharge and causing stress in forest stands, which increases the risk of wildfires.
