Brandenburg Interior Minister addresses youth violence and police upgrades

Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann has identified recent incidents of massive youth violence as a sign of failed integration. Speaking to the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung, Redmann noted that groups of suspects often share the same language, religion, and values. He highlighted challenges within families where children may hold more power than parents due to language barriers, potentially impacting social dynamics.

Redmann also reported that six suspects are currently in pre-trial detention following attempts to intimidate witnesses. Some witnesses have reportedly refused to testify due to fear of reprisals.

In a separate development, the Brandenburg police force is undergoing a significant fleet renewal. Minister Redmann symbolically handed over keys for the first 66 of 115 new patrol cars to Police President Oliver Stepien. The procurement, costing in the mid-single-digit millions, aims to replace approximately one-third of the state's patrol car fleet with new VW Passat models by the end of the year.

The upgrade includes the ‘OneDevice’ strategy, allowing officers to perform most duties, such as processing traffic fines and uploading crime scene photos, via smartphone to streamline workflows.
