Brandenburg medical landscape faces structural under-provision

The medical landscape in Brandenburg is undergoing a transformation characterized by the centralization of services and the specialization of locations. Dr. Colin Krüger, the new Chief Physician of the surgical clinic at Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder), has highlighted concerns regarding structural under-provision in the region.

While the neighboring metropolis of Berlin maintains an over-supply of more than 70 clinics, Brandenburg faces a shortage of local medical resources. This disparity often leads patients from surrounding areas to travel to the capital for complex treatments. Dr. Krüger aims to strengthen local medical offerings to ensure that residents can access both routine and complex care near their homes, both day and night.

Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) serves as one of four maximal providers in the region, with no comparable facility within a 40-kilometer radius. The hospital currently operates approximately 900 beds across 24 departments, employing around 300 doctors and 1,000 nursing staff.
