Brandenburg moose Bert dies after years of scientific monitoring

Bert, a well-known moose in Brandenburg, Germany, has died. The animal, which had been monitored by scientists using a GPS collar since 2019, was discovered lifeless in the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park.

A necropsy performed at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin revealed that the cause of death was severe internal injuries resulting from blunt trauma. This trauma caused a hematoma approximately the size of a football on the animal's flank. While the exact cause of the trauma remains unclear, experts noted that Bert was on a cattle pasture at the time of death and that another male moose had recently been in the area.

Bert, originally from Poland, had become a local mascot and a significant subject for scientific research, providing a continuous dataset of behavior and movement for nearly nine years. Following his death, the estimated population of wild moose in Brandenburg has decreased to four.
