Brandi Carlile announces expanded album edition

Musician Brandi Carlile has announced an expanded edition of her album, Returning To Myself, titled Returning To Myself (Sad Gay Version). The 21-track release is scheduled for digital distribution on September 25 via Interscope Records and Lost Highway Records.

The new edition includes all songs from the original pressing alongside intimate, reimagined versions of every track. A new version of the song “Human” features collaboration with electronic musician and composer Jon Hopkins. Additionally, the digital release will include a new cover of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes”.

Carlile co-produced four of the reimagined tracks with Aaron Dessner at Long Pond Studio. The artist described the project as an exploration of a self-defined “Sad Gay” genre, which she uses to describe emotionally immersive music that facilitates deep emotional self-indulgence. An autographed rainbow-colored vinyl edition will also be available for fans who pre-order by October 1st.
