Brandon Aiyuk's contract dispute triggers viral social media backlash

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has not played since a severe knee injury on October 20, 2024. During his rehabilitation, he allegedly missed required sessions, leading the team to void the guaranteed portion of his $120 million contract extension and creating a standoff over his status.

Aiyuk has taken to social media, posting videos that include tossing money on the floor and publicly supporting the Washington Commanders. He has demanded a release for more than a year while the 49ers retain his rights in hopes of a trade.

The situation was contrasted with newly acquired Patriots receiver A.J. Brown, who was criticized for reading a book on the sideline, a minor distraction compared with Aiyuk’s contract controversy.
