Brandon Clarke autopsy confirms accidental overdose

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has released the full autopsy report for Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, confirming his death was an accidental overdose. The report states that the effects of heroin and cocaine were the primary cause of death, with the “combined effects of multiple prescription medications” listed as a significant contributing factor.

Toxicology results identified several substances in Clarke’s system, including morphine, oxycodone, and mitragynine (derived from kratom), as well as various anti-anxiety medications and muscle relaxers found at therapeutic levels. Investigators noted the presence of cannabis products, vape devices, syringes, and a box of Narcan in his bedroom and bathroom. A plate containing an unidentified white powdery substance was also found in the kitchen of the San Fernando Valley residence where he was discovered unresponsive on May 11.

Clarke’s roommate informed authorities that the 29-year-old athlete had a history of drug use and had previously participated in rehabilitation programs. The autopsy follows a period of personal and professional challenges for the Canadian player, who had been involved in a high-speed police chase in Arkansas in April involving kratom possession.
