Brandon municipal election results spark concerns over diversity

Following recent municipal and school board elections in Brandon, Manitoba, political science professor Kelly Saunders has raised concerns regarding systemic and structural racism. Saunders noted that despite seven visible-minority candidates running for city council and two for the school board, none were elected.

The election results also highlighted a lack of female representation on the city council. Out of 27 candidates, only four were women, and Norah Woychyshyn is now the sole woman serving on the council. Saunders suggested that these outcomes could potentially discourage women and people of colour from seeking political office in the future.
