John Coltrane centennial marked by global musical tributes
The global jazz community is observing the centennial of legendary saxophonist John Coltrane, born September 23, 1926. Various tributes, releases, and performances are marking the milestone.
Musical releases include a massive box set of the historic Miles Davis and John Coltrane Columbia recordings (1955–1961) and the release of the ‘Tiberi Tapes,’ which feature private recordings from the early 1960s. Additionally, Branford Marsalis and Dianne Reeves have released ‘Dedicated to You,’ a project reinterpreting standards from the ‘John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman’ album.
Live events and broadcasts are also scheduled, such as a tribute concert in Tarnowie, Poland, featuring saxophonists Piotr Baron and Maciej Sikał, and dedicated radio programming on Rádio MEC. Discussions among contemporary musicians in the Czech Republic further highlight Coltrane’s enduring influence on improvisation and spiritual music.
