Moldova launches strategic infrastructure office amid regional budget shifts
Moldova is establishing a new state entity, ‘Moldova Project’, to centralize the implementation of strategic national infrastructure projects. Proposed by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, the office aims to address delays in major public works—such as hospitals, irrigation systems, and airports—by consolidating expertise that is currently fragmented across various ministries.
In related regional developments, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has signed a loan agreement with Moldova for up to 344 million euros to rehabilitate approximately 134 kilometers of roads, including the Râșcani–Soroca and Chișinău–Comrat routes. This project is supported by additional EU grants and connectivity mechanisms.
Across the region, significant fiscal and infrastructure activities are underway. Ukraine has adopted a 2027 budget that allocates nearly 96 billion euros for defense and security, representing approximately 43.8% of its GDP. In Romania, various local governments are managing diverse projects, ranging from the modernization of the Dinamo Stadium in Bucharest to road improvements in Brașov and Timiș. Meanwhile, Russia's Vladimir Putin has projected a federal budget deficit of approximately 2% of GDP by 2027, based on conservative oil price estimates.
