Brașov County mayors hesitate to cull bears over legal fears

Mayors in Brașov County, Romania, have expressed hesitation regarding orders to cull bears following a fatal bear attack in a cornfield near Olthévíz. During a meeting involving the county prefect, Mihai Cătălin Văsii, and forestry officials, several mayors indicated they are reluctant to take action due to fears of criminal complaints from environmental organizations.

Prefect Văsii addressed these concerns, stating that such legal threats are baseless and lack a legal foundation. He urged local authorities to fulfill their duties, noting that inaction could carry greater consequences than taking necessary measures under existing emergency government decrees.
