Braskem files for extrajudicial recovery to restructure US$ 10.9 billion in debt

Braskem has filed for extrajudicial recovery in São Paulo to restructure approximately US$ 10.9 billion in debt. The company stated the move aims to provide a stable legal environment for negotiations and emphasized that the process is strictly financial, meaning existing obligations to customers and suppliers remain unchanged.

As part of the restructuring landscape, Petrobras has expanded its commercial credit limit for Braskem from R$ 350 million to R$ 2.35 billion to facilitate the purchase of raw materials. This credit arrangement includes guarantees such as an escrow account containing R$ 300 million and the fiduciary assignment of receivables.

The financial situation follows a period of rising debt, with gross corporate debt increasing by 22.4% over the last year to US$ 10.4 billion. The news has also impacted the credit market, with approximately 175 Brazilian funds holding Braskem securities, totaling an exposure of R$ 586.4 million.

In Maceió, victims of the soil subsidence caused by Braskem's mining operations have expressed concern. The Unified Movement of Braskem Victims (MUVB) fears that the extrajudicial recovery process might prioritize corporate restructuring over the full compensation and reparations owed to the thousands of residents displaced since 2018.
