Braskem partners with LBDS to develop corn ethanol-based bioacetone technology
Braskem, a global leader in biopolymer production, has partnered with Lallemand Biofuels & Distilled Spirits (LBDS) to develop innovative technology for producing bioacetone from corn ethanol.
The new process utilizes LBDS’s expertise in yeast and Braskem’s proprietary separation technology to allow ethanol plants to generate high-value bioacetone as a co-product without compromising fuel production efficiency. Braskem will manage market development and commercialization, specifically targeting the United States and Europe.
Bioacetone serves as a sustainable, drop-in alternative for industries seeking to reduce their carbon footprint, including the cosmetics, coatings, adhesives, and personal hygiene sectors. The global demand for acetone currently exceeds 8 million tons per year.
