Brasília court convicts police officer for violent assault in Asa Norte

The 8th Criminal Court of Brasília has sentenced Gustavo Gonçalves Suppa, a civil police officer from the Distrito Federal, for the violent assault of advertiser Diego Torres. The incident occurred in July 2025 in the Asa Norte region following a traffic collision between Torres' vehicle and an unmarked police car driven by Suppa.

Witnesses and video footage reported that the officers used extreme aggression, including punches and rifle butts, against Torres. Even after being handcuffed and offering no resistance, Torres was held on the ground with a police officer's knee pressing into his back for several minutes. The incident also involved the victim's five-year-old son, who was accidentally struck by a car door during the confrontation and left crying at the scene.

Judge Osvaldo Tovani ruled that while the initial pursuit may have been justified by the collision, the subsequent use of force exceeded legal limits once the situation was under control. The court described the continued physical restraint of the handcuffed victim as an “unnecessary increase in violence.” The defense's argument that the officer was performing his legal duties in a tense scenario was rejected by the tribunal.
