Brasília Film Festival opens after funding crisis resolved

The 59th Brasília Film Festival (Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro) commenced this Friday, following a brief period of uncertainty when the event was nearly canceled due to a lack of funding. The situation was resolved after the government of the Federal District intervened to provide the necessary resources.

The festival opened with the premiere of ‘A Pele Morta’, directed by siblings Denise Moraes and Bruno Fatumbi Torres. The film serves as a tribute to their late father, filmmaker Geraldo Moraes, and explores themes of solidarity and indigenous identity. The opening night also featured a career tribute to actress Julia Lemmertz, who received the Troféu Candango de Conjunto da Obra.

This edition has seen a record-breaking 1,928 film entries, with over 70 selected for various competitive and parallel showcases. The programming includes the ‘Vozes e Lutas’ session, highlighting political and cultural movements, and the premiere of episodes from the series ‘Delegado’. The event, which is considered an intangible heritage of the Federal District, will run until September 19.
