Brasília leads in sustainable development and regional GDP growth

Brasília has emerged as a leader in sustainable development among Brazil's large cities. According to the 2026 Sustainable Cities Development Index (IDSC-BR) released by the Instituto Cidades Sustentáveis, the capital ranked first among municipalities with over 500,000 inhabitants, scoring 61.71 points. This score places Brasília in the high sustainable development bracket, surpassing Curitiba and São Paulo.

Economic data also highlights the capital's strength. The Distrito Federal recorded a 2.9% GDP growth in the second quarter, the highest in the Center-West region. This expansion was primarily driven by the service sector, which grew by 3% and accounts for approximately 95% of the local economy. While agriculture in the region saw a 4.7% increase, the industrial sector in the Distrito Federal experienced a 1.2% decline.

Despite these achievements, challenges remain in specific areas. The Basic Education Development Index (Ideb) for high school in the Distrito Federal saw a slight decrease from 4.2 in 2023 to 4.1 in 2025.
