Bratislava joins Swimmable Cities alliance amid urban growth pressures

Bratislava is addressing dual challenges regarding urban growth and environmental integration. The city has officially joined the international Swimmable Cities alliance, a movement supported by over 250 organizations in 121 cities worldwide. This initiative aims to promote the protection and cleanliness of urban rivers, encouraging community use and safe swimming. While the Danube offers suitable water quality, city officials noted that stone embankments currently limit safe access to the river.

Simultaneously, the capital faces significant pressure from rapid population growth and increasing density. Mayoral candidates have highlighted concerns regarding the city's infrastructure readiness. Proposed solutions to mitigate traffic congestion and support new developments include the construction of the Karpaty tunnel, a sixth bridge, the extension of tram lines to outlying districts, and the development of Park and Ride facilities to facilitate public transit use.
