Bratislava rejects new waste incineration plant proposal

The Bratislava City Hall has rejected the proposal for a new large-scale waste incineration plant, stating that the capital city does not require additional capacity. According to city spokesperson Peter Bubla, the existing waste-to-energy facility (ZEVO) is sufficient to process all waste produced within the city's territory.

The dispute follows the conclusion of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed Center for Energy Waste Recovery (CEZO) project located at the Slovnaft refinery. The city has accused Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba of making false claims, specifically regarding the technology used at the current ZEVO plant. While the Minister characterized the existing grate furnace technology as outdated, the city maintains it is a modern method used in various European cities, including Vienna and Prague.

Bratislava officials noted that the city council and several local district councils had already expressed opposition to the project in April 2025. The city is considering further legal steps, having previously filed an appeal against the Ministry of Environment's decision, citing concerns over public health, water resource protection, and the impact on protected areas.
