Bratislava vows to protect Pečniansky forest following court ruling
The City of Bratislava has declared its commitment to protecting the Pečniansky forest in the Petržalka district, regardless of ownership status. This follows a decision by the Supreme Court to reject an appeal by the state enterprise Lesy SR and the General Prosecutor's Office in a long-standing land swap dispute.
Bratislava officials, including spokesperson Peter Bubla, emphasized the area's significant ecological, climatic, and recreational value. The forest is part of the European-significant Bratislava Floodplains and represents one of the last remaining alluvial forest complexes between Bratislava and Vienna.
Beyond its role as a habitat for protected species and a tool for climate change mitigation, the area is strategically vital for the city's water supply, containing essential water sources and wells. The city intends to maintain protection through strict adherence to zoning plans, cooperation with nature conservation authorities, and exploring further measures such as establishing a municipal protected area.
