German manufacturing traditions face closures amid insolvency
Several traditional German manufacturing companies are facing closure following insolvency proceedings.
The Kahla porcelain manufacturer in Thuringia will cease production by the end of 2026 after failing to secure an investor, including unsuccessful negotiations with Turkish firms. Insolvency administrator Rolf Rombach cited high energy costs and weak demand in the gastronomy sector as primary drivers for the shutdown. The company, which has operated for 182 years, will wind down operations in stages.
In Braunschweig, the Wolters brewery is also set to end production by the end of the year due to declining sales in the German beer market. The NGG union is advocating for a cooperative ownership model to save the 400-year-old site, noting that approximately 560,000 euros have already been pledged via citizen capital initiatives to preserve jobs.
Additionally, the Eichbaum brewery in Mannheim has halted production, resulting in approximately 180 job losses. While the brand rights will be acquired by Park & Bellheimer, the local manufacturing presence will end following failed rescue attempts.
