Braunschweig city center faces retail decline and mobility issues

The retail landscape in Braunschweig's city center is facing significant challenges as more physical stores close. The Mäc Geiz branch located at Schild 6, which has operated since March 2012, is scheduled to close on November 21 due to economic reasons. The four employees at the location have already received termination notices, and a clearance sale is planned before the final closure.

This follows recent departures of other retailers, including the decor chain Depot and the fashion brand Eterna. Experts and observers attribute the decline in attractiveness of the city center to several factors: the rise of e-commerce, changing consumer behavior, increased costs for retailers, and difficulties regarding urban mobility. Specifically, high costs for public transport and the difficulty of finding parking for motorists are cited as barriers that discourage residents from visiting the downtown area.
