Volkswagen faces legal developments in diesel scandal and manager disputes

In the ongoing Volkswagen diesel emissions fraud trial in Braunschweig, Germany, a court has issued an arrest warrant for one of the three defendants. The 66-year-old former executive was detained following the second day of proceedings to ensure the trial continues. The defendant, who has filed an appeal against the decision, previously missed the start of the trial citing health reasons, which the presiding judge ruled were insufficiently documented.

The trial involves allegations that former executives helped develop illegal defeat devices or failed to act against the development of software used to bypass emissions tests. The legal proceedings are expected to last approximately 150 days, potentially continuing until late 2028.

Separately, the Braunschweig Labor Court has ordered Volkswagen to pay approximately 300,000 euros in back wages to a former manager. This follows a pattern of legal disputes involving two former managers who were dismissed after allegedly leaking internal revision reports to authorities and the media. While the court ruled the summary dismissals were not timely, it upheld the validity of the standard terminations. The managers have cited whistleblower protection laws in their defense.
