Braunschweig maintains stagnant parking fees amid budget deficit
The city of Braunschweig is facing a significant budget deficit while maintaining resident parking permit fees that have remained unchanged since the 1990s. Currently, a permit costs 30.70 euros per year, a rate that was previously the nationwide maximum set by the Federal Ministry of Transport.
While a 2020 amendment to the Road Traffic Act allowed states and municipalities to set their own higher fee structures, Braunschweig has not utilized this authority. In contrast, other German cities like Bonn and Münster charge significantly higher annual rates, and international cities such as Stockholm and Amsterdam have even higher costs. Braunschweig has announced that starting August 1, 2026, resident parking permits will be issued exclusively in digital format.
