Braunschweig orders evacuation over suspected WWII bomb

Authorities in Braunschweig, Germany, have ordered the evacuation of approximately 4,200 residents following the suspected discovery of a World War II unexploded bomb. The suspected ordnance was identified during systematic ordnance probing operations northeast of Leiferde.

The evacuation zone, scheduled for Friday, October 16, includes the districts of Leiferde and Stöckheim, as well as specific properties in southern Rüningen. Residents are required to vacate their homes by 8:00 AM to allow for the excavation and disposal of the device.

To facilitate the operation, several major roads will be closed, including Leipziger Straße, Rüninger Weg, and Schenkendamm. While the discovery has caused significant traffic disruptions, city officials stated that the find is located on non-residential and non-public transit land, meaning there is no immediate danger as long as the object is not uncontrollably unearthed.
