Brave browser implements new protections against WebGL and WebGPU fingerprinting
Brave has introduced new privacy measures in version 1.93 to combat digital fingerprinting through WebGL and WebGPU APIs. These APIs, while intended for hardware-accelerated graphics, can be exploited to collect precise hardware details such as graphics card models, drivers, and chip architectures to create stable user identifiers.
Following an analysis of highly visited websites, Brave determined that many API calls were used for tracking rather than graphic optimization. To mitigate this, the browser now implements three specific changes: WebGL manufacturer and rendering engine strings are replaced with generic values, WebGPU adapter descriptive information is cleared, and WebGL extension lists are randomized for every session and website visited.
