Braxton Ashcraft placed on injured list, ending Pirates season

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher Braxton Ashcraft has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right arm discomfort, ending his first full season. The injury, which surfaced abruptly, has been attributed to general fatigue rather than structural damage.

Ashcraft was sidelined on September 10 as a preemptive measure to ensure availability for a potential wild-card postseason berth. However, the Pirates were subsequently eliminated from playoff contention. While Ashcraft expressed a desire to continue pitching if the team remained in the race, he will not return to the mound this year.

Ashcraft had a standout season, leading the Pirates' starting pitchers in wins (14), ERA (3.65), and WHIP (1.09) across 28 starts and 165.1 innings. He also recorded the team's only complete game of the season. Pirates manager Don Kelly described Ashcraft as a ‘competitor’ and noted relief that the injury was not serious.
