TSE and Google launch YouTube tool to combat election deepfakes

The Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and Google have launched a joint campaign to combat the use of deepfakes during the 2026 elections. The initiative encourages candidates to use a YouTube tool called Likeness ID (Detecção por Semelhanças) to identify AI-generated content that mimics their appearance.

To use the tool, candidates must be over 18 and possess a YouTube account. The process involves a rigorous identity verification through YouTube Studio, requiring the submission of official documents and a photo and video selfie. Once verified, the system creates a digital record of the user's appearance and performs automated scans to detect unauthorized synthetic content. The verification process can take up to two days.

If the system identifies potential matches, the user is notified and can request content removal based on YouTube's privacy policies. TSE President Kassio Nunes Marques emphasized that this partnership between the public and private sectors is vital for preserving democratic values and strengthening electoral trust. Google Brazil President Fábio Coelho noted the tool's importance in protecting candidates, particularly women, from digital attacks.
